UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an immediate ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip during his visit to Al Arish. Upon his arrival at Al Arish International Airport, he was welcomed by North Sinai Governor Mohamed Abdel Fadil Shosha. Guterres visited wounded Palestinians receiving treatment at Al Arish General Hospital, checked aid convoys at Rafah Border Crossing, and met with humanitarian workers on the Egyptian side.
During his visit, Guterres emphasized the importance of Israel allowing aid trucks near Egypt’s border to enter the besieged enclave. He praised Egypt’s efforts in receiving wounded Palestinians and delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Accompanied by Health and Population Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, head of the Egyptian Red Crescent Society in North Sinai Khaled Zayed, and senior security officials, Guterres flew from Cairo to make his second visit to the governorate since the outbreak of the Gaza war.
North Sinai Governor Shosha briefed Guterres on Egypt’s efforts to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza and end Israel’s aggression on the strip, with the support of other Arab nations. He mentioned that there are approximately 7,000 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid waiting in North Sinai, but inspection procedures imposed by Israeli authorities have delayed the delivery of relief.
The situation in Gaza remains critical, with ongoing violence and a dire need for humanitarian assistance. Guterres’ call for an immediate ceasefire highlights the urgency of the situation and the importance of providing aid to those in need.
The UN chief’s visit to Al Arish demonstrates the international community’s concern for the plight of Palestinians in Gaza and the efforts being made to address the humanitarian crisis. By meeting with wounded Palestinians and aid workers, Guterres is able to witness firsthand the impact of the conflict and the need for immediate action.
Guterres’ praise for Egypt’s role in providing aid to Gaza underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing humanitarian crises. Despite the challenges posed by Israeli restrictions, efforts are being made to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most.
As the UN continues to work towards a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, it is essential that all parties involved prioritize the needs of civilians and ensure that humanitarian aid is able to reach those who are suffering. Guterres’ visit serves as a reminder of the international community’s commitment to supporting the people of Gaza during this challenging time.
