During a meeting in Brussels, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry emphasized the need for an immediate cessation of Israeli hostilities in Gaza as a critical step towards addressing the crisis. The meeting, which included the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Jordan, as well as the Secretary-General of the Arab League and European Union officials, focused on the situation in the Gaza Strip.

Shoukry highlighted the importance of definitive international support, including from the European Union, in achieving a sustainable solution to the current crisis. He expressed concern over the deliberate targeting of Palestinian civilians and infrastructure by Israel, emphasizing the potential risks and consequences for the entire region.

Furthermore, Shoukry reaffirmed Egypt’s rejection of attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians from their homeland, calling it a violation of their human rights. He urged the European Union to take unequivocal positions in support of an immediate ceasefire and to condemn all violations of international humanitarian law. Additionally, he warned of the potential impact of the crisis on the spread of extremist and inflammatory ideologies globally.

The aerial view of a destroyed UNRWA Palestinian School in Jabalia, Gaza, following Israeli attacks on December 12, 2023, serves as a reminder of the urgency and severity of the situation. The school, which provided refuge for thousands of displaced Palestinians, has become unusable, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Shoukry’s remarks highlight the need for immediate and concerted international action to address the crisis in Gaza. As the situation continues to escalate, it is imperative for the international community, including the European Union, to prioritize efforts towards achieving a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire in the region. Failure to do so could have far-reaching and potentially destabilizing consequences for the entire region.
