On Sunday, January 21st, 2024, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry traveled to Brussels for a working visit, where he led Egypt’s delegation to the 10th meeting of the EU-Egypt Association Council. Co-chairing the meeting with Shoukry was the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell. Other European Union (EU) foreign ministers also participated in the meeting.
The significance of the meeting lay in its commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the association agreement between Egypt and the EU, which came into force in 2004. The meeting aimed to assess the implementation of the Egyptian-European partnership and to leverage the framework of the Egypt-EU Partnership Priorities 2021-2027.
Shoukry’s visit also included a working breakfast with EU foreign ministers to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral ties and monitor the progress of joint projects and programs between Egypt and the EU. The discussions also involved exchanging perspectives on ongoing regional crises, such as the situation in the Gaza Strip, conditions in Sudan, Somalia, Libya, and security concerns in the Red Sea.
Additionally, Shoukry held meetings with foreign ministers of EU countries and European commissioners responsible for neighborhood policies, the economy, energy, migration, climate, humanitarian affairs, and crisis management. Furthermore, he participated in a meeting with the foreign ministers of Jordan and Saudi Arabia, alongside the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, to address developments in the Gaza Strip and the future of the Palestinian cause.
Overall, Shoukry’s visit to Brussels was aimed at strengthening Egypt’s partnership with the EU, as well as addressing various regional issues of mutual concern.
