Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry recently had a phone call with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to discuss developments in the Gaza Strip. The conversation focused on efforts to achieve a permanent ceasefire, exchange prisoners and detainees, and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.

During the call, Blinken expressed the US’s full appreciation for Egypt’s mediation efforts between Israel and Hamas, as well as its work to provide humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip. He also mentioned America’s decision to utilize a sea corridor to deliver aid to Gaza, in addition to the existing Rafah land crossing.

Shoukry emphasized the importance of intensifying efforts to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire to prevent further loss of life among Palestinian civilians. He also highlighted the need to implement Security Council Resolution #2720 to coordinate and monitor aid delivery and address obstacles imposed by Israel.

The ministers also discussed the potentially destabilizing developments in the southern Red Sea region and the threats they pose to international trade. Shoukry warned of the regional repercussions of expanding the conflict, emphasizing the risks to stability, security, and the interests of multiple countries.

In particular, Shoukry cautioned against any military operations in Rafah city due to the severe humanitarian consequences they would entail. He reiterated Egypt’s rejection of any attempts to displace Palestinians from their lands, condemning such actions as violations of international law and attempts to undermine the Palestinian cause.

Shoukry and Blinken agreed to maintain ongoing coordination and communication to support mediation efforts and facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. They underscored the importance of continued collaboration to address the complex challenges facing the region and work towards sustainable solutions.

Overall, the phone call between the Egyptian Foreign Minister and the US Secretary of State underscored the shared commitment to promoting peace, stability, and humanitarian assistance in the Gaza Strip. By working together and staying vigilant in their efforts, the two countries aim to contribute to the resolution of the ongoing crisis and alleviate the suffering of those affected.
