Egypt: Prime Minister Leads First Meeting of Supreme Council of Digital Society Following its Reconstruction

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly recently stressed the significant role of the Supreme Council of Digital Society in achieving various goals aimed at advancing Egypt towards becoming an integrated digital state. The council has been recently reconstituted and is tasked with approving the national strategy for building a digital society, implementing policies for structural changes, and developing mechanisms to enhance digital government services and promote a flourishing digital industry that attracts investments and job opportunities.

Under Madbouly’s leadership, the first meeting of the reconstituted Supreme Council of Digital Society took place on Wednesday, March 13, 2024. Among the attendees were Minister of Justice Omar Marwan, Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala al-Saeed, Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat, President of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) Khairat Barakat, Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology for Administrative Development, Digital Transformation, and Mechanization Khaled al-Attar, Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology for Infrastructure Affairs Raafat Hindy, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) Rami Aboulnaga, along with other representatives from relevant ministries and authorities.

During the meeting, the council approved recommendations put forth by the data, applications, and services governance committee, headed by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. One key recommendation was the importance of adhering to unified digital identities for citizens when interacting with government applications and services.

The council’s focus on digital transformation underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing services and infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of society. By prioritizing a digital-first approach, Egypt aims to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accessibility in public services, ultimately improving the quality of life for its citizens.

In addition to approving the national strategy for building an integrated digital state, the Supreme Council of Digital Society will also work on developing policies, procedures, and mechanisms to support the structural changes necessary for a successful digital transformation. This includes initiatives to enhance digital government services, promote innovation in the digital industry, and create a conducive environment for investment and job creation.
