The Chairman of the Defense and National Security Committee in the Egyptian House of Representatives, Ahmed al-Awady, expressed Egypt’s unwavering support for President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s decisions and actions in defense of Palestine. He also emphasized the increasingly strained relations between Egypt and Israel.
In a statement to RT, Awady reiterated Egypt’s opposition to any efforts to compromise Egyptian and Arab national security. He underscored Egypt’s continued commitment to its historical humanitarian role in supporting the rights of Palestinians. Additionally, Awady emphasized Egypt’s stance that a just and comprehensive peace, founded on the two-state solution, is crucial for achieving security and sustainable peace for Palestine.
Awady also warned that Egyptian-Israeli relations are facing their most challenging period in history due to Israel’s aggressive actions in the Gaza Strip. He highlighted the false and hostile allegations made by the Israeli government and before the International Court of Justice. These allegations were an attempt to shift blame to Egypt for purported negligence in delivering aid and relief to Gaza through the Rafah crossing.
Moreover, Awady condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statements about Israel’s refusal to cease its conflict with Hamas until the closure of the Philadelphia corridor between Egypt and Gaza. He deemed these statements provocative and obstructive to Egypt’s efforts to rescue the individuals in need in the Gaza Strip. Awady cautioned that any Israeli actions in this direction would pose a significant threat to Egyptian-Israeli relations, given that they would breach the security agreements between the two countries.
Notably, the Philadelphia corridor is governed by security and military appendices to the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, designating it as a buffer zone between Gaza and Egypt. Awady stressed that any modifications to Israel’s presence in this region must receive Egypt’s full and explicit approval.
In conclusion, Chairman Ahmed al-Awady’s statements underscore Egypt’s support for Palestine and its concerns regarding the escalating tensions with Israel.
