Egypt’s Ministry of Manpower and Immigration recently released a report highlighting the key labor issues that have been addressed and guided by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi between 2014 and 2024. Despite facing global challenges, the report indicated positive outcomes in terms of addressing unemployment and integrating irregular workers into the labor market.
One of the major achievements mentioned in the report was the significant decline in unemployment rates from 13 percent in 2014 to 6.9 percent in 2024. This decrease was attributed to the implementation of giant national projects that created millions of job opportunities across various sectors. Additionally, a large number of irregular workers were formally registered with the Ministry of Labor and integrated into the formal labor market.
In specific projects like New Alamein City, there are now 28,298 irregular workers employed, while in the New Administrative Capital, 65,261 workers have been absorbed into the labor market. The ministry highlighted its collaboration with national partner agencies to reduce unemployment and promote job creation through initiatives like the national job bulletin released every 15 days and employment forums in partnership with private sector companies.
Moreover, the ministry has facilitated the employment of over seven million young individuals within the country and abroad by leveraging various tools and mechanisms for employment in collaboration with the private sector. This was done based on the database of permits granted to Egyptian workers seeking opportunities overseas.
During the same timeframe, the ministry also granted licenses to more than 225 companies to recruit Egyptian workers for employment abroad. In addition, over 1,207 other companies had their licenses renewed, indicating a commitment to facilitating overseas employment opportunities for Egyptian citizens.
The efforts outlined in the report underscore the government’s commitment to tackling labor issues and creating more opportunities for the workforce in Egypt. By addressing unemployment rates, formalizing irregular work, and fostering partnerships with the private sector, the Ministry of Manpower and Immigration has played a crucial role in advancing labor market reforms and promoting economic stability in the country.
