Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Issa celebrated Egypt’s remarkable achievement in the tourism sector, announcing that the country welcomed over 14 million tourists in 2023, breaking the previous record set in 2010. Issa highlighted the significant increase in tourism demand during the fourth quarter of 2023, which saw 3.6 million tourists arriving in Egypt, marking an 8% increase compared to the previous year.
Despite facing challenges such as the war on Gaza, Egypt was able to surpass expectations and achieve record-breaking numbers in tourism. Issa credited the success to the National Tourism Strategy, which focused on stimulating the supply side of Egyptian tourism, building confidence in the private sector, and increasing the state’s revenue from the sector.
The implementation of policies and financial reforms, particularly within the Supreme Council of Antiquities, played a crucial role in achieving these record numbers. Efforts to double the available air capacity and improve tourism services were also highlighted as key contributing factors to the sector’s success.
Issa emphasized the government’s commitment to doubling the current air capacity by 2028, with evidence of progress shown through the significant increase in the number of incentivized and incoming air seats to Egypt. Moreover, measures are being taken to enhance hotel security, double capacity, and improve the investment climate to further support the tourism sector.
The Minister’s remarks at the cabinet meeting shed light on the comprehensive efforts being made to promote and advance Egypt’s tourism industry. With a focus on sustainable growth and development, the country aims to build on its success and continue to attract a growing number of tourists in the coming years.
