Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry is set to embark on an official visit to Geneva, where he will participate in the high-level segment (HLS) of the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and the Conference on Disarmament (CD). This important trip was announced by Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.
During his time at the UNHRC-HLS, Shoukry will deliver Egypt’s statement and engage in discussions on various regional and international crises, with a focus on their impact on global human rights conditions. The ongoing war in Gaza will be a key topic of conversation during the meetings. Abu Zeid emphasized the significance of Egypt’s participation in these discussions in a statement released on February 24, 2024.
In addition to the UNHRC-HLS, Shoukry will also take part in the CD-HLS, which is being held under Indonesia’s presidency. This forum provides a unique opportunity for countries to engage in multilateral disarmament negotiations and dialogue on global security issues.
On the sidelines of the main events, Shoukry will have the opportunity to meet with a number of senior officials and diplomats in Geneva. These meetings will enable him to discuss key issues facing the region and explore potential areas of cooperation.
One of the highlights of Shoukry’s visit will be his participation in the meetings of the Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee, which was established following the Joint Arab Islamic Extraordinary Summit in Riyadh in November. The committee will focus on international efforts to address the crisis in Gaza and will provide a platform for discussions with UN officials on this pressing issue.
The Conference on Disarmament, where Shoukry will also be in attendance, is a crucial platform for countries to engage in negotiations on disarmament and security issues. As the world’s single multilateral disarmament negotiating forum, the CD plays a vital role in promoting peace and stability on a global scale.
Overall, Shoukry’s visit to Geneva is expected to be a productive and impactful one, with a focus on addressing key global challenges and promoting cooperation among nations. His participation in the UNHRC-HLS and CD-HLS demonstrates Egypt’s commitment to advancing human rights, disarmament, and international security efforts.
