During a meeting on January 16, 2024, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry reaffirmed Egypt’s dedication to ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip despite facing obstacles from Israel. Shoukry made these statements while meeting with Sigrid Kaag, the United Nations Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza, who was visiting the region for the first time since assuming her post under Security Council Resolution 2720 (2023).
The two discussed the dire humanitarian situation and declining services in Gaza, according to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid. Shoukry sought Kaag’s perspective on priorities and missions in the upcoming period and reiterated Egypt’s commitment to supporting the UN and providing necessary facilities to carry out its mission in accordance with the UN Security Council resolution.
Shoukry also urged for the prompt initiation of a UN mechanism to expedite the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, emphasizing the need for Israel to facilitate the UN official’s mission. He emphasized that a cessation of hostilities remains the most effective way to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Kaag expressed deep appreciation for Egypt’s efforts, particularly in providing and delivering aid to the enclave. She also praised Egypt’s support for the UNSC resolution and for facilitating the use of the Rafah crossing by UN relief agencies to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.
As part of coordination efforts to launch the UN mechanism for accelerating assistance to the Gaza Strip, Kaag is scheduled to visit Arish Airport and land Rafah crossing on Wednesday. This visit underscores the ongoing commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the collaboration between Egypt and the UN in providing much-needed aid to the region.
