In a recent announcement, the government of Egypt has officially appointed Assistant Foreign Minister for Regional and International Economic Affairs, Ragy al-Etreby, as the presidential representative of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to the BRICS. Egypt joined the BRICS in 2024 and the Foreign Ministry made it known on Tuesday that Etreby will also hold the same position in the G20 as the Egyptian government informed the Brazilian rotating presidency of the G20 about this appointment.
The Foreign Ministry took to its Facebook account to share this information and also highlighted Brazil’s invitation for Egypt to participate as a guest in G20 meetings. Etreby expressed the enthusiasm of the BRICS member states in inviting Egypt to join the group and also highlighted Brazil’s keenness to involve Egypt in the various discussions of the G20. This reflects Egypt’s regional and international standing as well as its significant role in various international economic matters.
Etreby emphasized that there are explicit presidential instructions to ensure active and effective participation from Egypt and to focus on enhancing cooperation between Egypt and the BRICS member states across various platforms. Additionally, he mentioned that the presidential directives included a focus on prioritized issues in Egypt, Africa, and other developing countries during the G20 meetings.
By appointing Etreby as the presidential representative to the BRICS and the G20, Egypt aims to meaningfully engage with these international platforms and contribute to important discussions on economic cooperation, development, and global issues.
Egypt’s membership in the BRICS and its participation in the G20 meetings are indicative of the country’s growing influence and its commitment to playing a significant role in shaping international economic policies and decisions. This move also underscores the recognition of Egypt’s potential to contribute to the collective efforts of these influential global platforms.
Etreby’s appointment is seen as a strategic decision to strengthen Egypt’s position in international economic affairs and to actively contribute to discussions on global economic issues. It also reflects Egypt’s eagerness to collaborate with other BRICS member states and contribute to the development and progress of the group.
As Egypt takes on this new role within the BRICS and the G20, it is expected to actively engage in discussions and initiatives that aim to address pressing global economic challenges and promote cooperation among nations. The appointment of Etreby signifies Egypt’s commitment to actively participate in these crucial international forums and to work towards common goals that benefit both the country and the broader international community.
