Egypt is actively supporting the Low Carbon Building Initiative (LCBI) with a strong focus on providing affordable housing for low-income households, according to Assistant Minister of Housing for technical affairs Abdel Khaleq Ibrahim. Ibrahim emphasized Egypt’s commitment to balancing social responsibility with environmental protection during a ministerial meeting for low-carbon buildings in Paris as part of the first Buildings and Climate Global Forum, co-organized by France and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) on March 7-8.
In order to improve citizens’ quality of life by offering decent housing and simultaneously fulfill international commitments to reduce emissions and conserve essential resources like water and energy, Egypt aims to secure the necessary funds and increase environmental awareness. Ibrahim highlighted the ministry’s efforts in supporting a national green finance and capacity-building initiative as part of a comprehensive strategy to promote the goals of LCBI.
LCBI, established in 2022, is a pan-European association dedicated to lowering carbon emissions in the real-estate industry. The initiative strives to develop a pan-European low carbon label that assesses the carbon footprint of real estate based on a Life-Cycle Analysis. The first Buildings and Climate Global Forum attracted about 800 participants who engaged in CEO and ministerial round tables, plenary sessions, solution exhibitions, collective initiative showcases, and presentations to facilitate networking and idea exchange.
At the forum, governments were called upon to endorse a framework for global initiatives in the building sector to promote decarbonization and resilience to climate change. The discussions emphasized the importance of collaboration and shared strategies to address the challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability in the built environment.
Egypt’s participation in the forum reflects its commitment to promoting sustainable development and addressing environmental concerns in the housing sector. By aligning social and environmental goals, Egypt seeks to improve living conditions for its citizens while contributing to global efforts to combat climate change and reduce carbon emissions.
In conclusion, Egypt’s proactive engagement in the Low Carbon Building Initiative and participation in international forums like the Buildings and Climate Global Forum demonstrate its dedication to promoting sustainability, environmental protection, and affordable housing for all segments of society. Through collaboration and strategic initiatives, Egypt is working towards a more sustainable future for its citizens and the planet as a whole.
