Former Assistant Foreign Minister Mona Omar emphasized the necessity of a unified and strong Arab response to Ethiopia’s violations of the sovereignty of Arab countries through the signing of an illegal memorandum of understanding with the breakaway territory of “Somaliland”. This action poses a threat to the security and stability of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

In an exclusive statement to MENA on Wednesday17/1/2024, the diplomat highlighted the importance of an emergency meeting of the Arab League at the foreign ministers’ level to address the severe repercussions of Ethiopia’s deal with “Somaliland”. She called for standing in solidarity with Somalia in the current crisis and rejecting Ethiopia’s interference in the internal affairs of Arab countries.

Ambassador Omar also stressed the need to take all necessary measures and support Mogadishu before the UN Security Council. The agreement, allowing Ethiopia to use the “Berbera Port” in exchange for recognizing Somaliland’s future secession from the Federal Republic of Somalia, infringes on Somaliland’s sovereignty and jeopardizes common interests that unite Ethiopia with some Arab countries.

She urged these countries to increase pressure on Addis Ababa and threaten to impose sanctions if it does not rescind its unilateral actions. She warned that failing to take a deterrent stance may encourage other countries to follow Ethiopia’s example, leading to serious repercussions on regional and international peace and security.

The expert in African affairs cautioned that Ethiopia’s utilization of the “Berbera Port” could exacerbate tensions and conflicts in the region. She also expressed concern about potential threats in the Red Sea due to Ethiopia’s strong relationship with Israel.

In conclusion, she called on the international community and the UN Security Council to swiftly act to break the illegal agreement and preserve international peace and security. “Somaliland” is an unrecognized state in the Horn of Africa, located on the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden and bordered by Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Somalia.
