Egypt is actively seeking to participate as a member in the International Steering Committee for the One Planet Summit, which was launched at the UN climate conference, COP28, in Dubai in late 2023, according to Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Suwailam on Tuesday 23/1/2024.

During a virtual meeting with Barbara Pompili, French President Emmanuel Macron’s Special Envoy for the One Water Summit, Suwailam discussed Egypt’s agenda for the upcoming One Planet Summit, which is scheduled for September 2024 in New York.

As the chair of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), Egypt aims to communicate Africa’s vision for water and climate adaptation as part of its significant role in global climate action, the minister emphasized.

Suwailam also highlighted Egypt’s interest in sharing knowledge and expertise in effective water management and climate adaptation. He briefed the French official on Egypt’s successful efforts to elevate the importance of water on the global climate agenda during the 5th and 6th editions of Cairo Water Week, as well as at various regional and international events.

The summit is set to be held under the theme “One Water Summit” on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly’s high-level session.

Egypt’s proactive approach to participating in and contributing to global climate and water management initiatives reflects its commitment to addressing pressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development. Suwailam’s engagement with international partners and commitment to showcasing Egypt’s accomplishments in this field demonstrate the country’s dedication to advancing global efforts for climate adaptation and water management. As a key player in the African continent and the broader international community, Egypt’s involvement in the One Planet Summit will undoubtedly contribute to the collective efforts to address climate and water challenges at a global level.
