Head of the mission of the International Council for Human Rights at the United Nations in Geneva, Haitham Abu Said, expressed his concern over the recent escalation between Iran and Israel, stating that it poses a significant threat to international peace and security. He emphasized the need for serious efforts to be made in order to prevent the conflict from further escalating.
Speaking to MENA, Abu Said highlighted Egypt’s repeated warnings against the expansion of the conflict. He emphasized that Egypt understands the nature and danger of the conflict, which is deeply rooted in the traditions of both Arab and Islamic concepts. Abu Said also pointed out that Egypt could play a crucial role in preventing the conflict from escalating further by working in cooperation with the Arab League and the Gulf Cooperation Council. He suggested that Egypt could propose acceptable solutions to prevent the entire region from facing a disaster with negative consequences for everyone involved.
Abu Said emphasized Egypt’s fundamental role in addressing the crises affecting Palestine, as most Arab countries are impacted by the situation due to their geographical and historical ties. He mentioned ongoing communication between the Egyptian leadership and various social and political groups in Palestine, highlighting Egypt’s position as a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause.
Regarding the recent Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip on October 7, Abu Said noted that Egypt has played a significant role in managing the conflict based on its past experiences and knowledge gained from previous conflicts with Israel. Despite efforts to minimize losses and manage the situation, he criticized Israel’s stubbornness for bringing the situation to its current state.
Abu Said praised Egypt for thwarting many of Israel’s plans to displace the Palestinian people from their land. He highlighted Egypt’s strong and calm approach in confronting the issue, which has been positively recognized internationally. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, visited the Rafah border crossing to express their appreciation and support for Egypt and its authorities.
In conclusion, Abu Said stressed the importance of international cooperation and dialogue to prevent further escalation of the conflict between Iran and Israel. He urged all parties involved to work towards finding peaceful solutions that would benefit the entire region and avoid a humanitarian crisis with far-reaching consequences. Egypt’s role in the conflict resolution process was highlighted, along with its efforts to support the Palestinian cause and maintain stability in the region.
