Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently participated in a historic signing ceremony, where a number of agreements and memorandums of understanding were signed between the two countries. The goal of these agreements is to boost trade exchange between Egypt and Turkey to $15 billion within the next few years.
One of the significant outcomes of the meeting was the signing of a joint declaration on restructuring high-level strategic cooperation council meetings between Egypt and Turkey. This move is expected to enhance the overall strategic cooperation between the two nations.
During a joint press conference at the Ettehadiya Palace, President Sisi expressed his warm welcome to President Erdoğan, noting that it was the Turkish leader’s first visit to Egypt in over a decade. Sisi emphasized the importance of opening a new chapter in Egypt-Turkey relations to strengthen and improve bilateral ties.
Sisi also highlighted the historical relationship between the two countries, acknowledging the common civilizational and cultural heritage shared by Egypt and Turkey.
In addition, Sisi mentioned that Egypt is currently Turkey’s foremost trading partner in Africa, while Turkey is one of the most significant destinations for Egyptian exports. The two leaders intend to work together to elevate trade exchange between the two countries and boost joint investments.
The discussion also touched upon the urgent need for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the importance of achieving stability in the West Bank to resume the peace process, ultimately leading to the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The leaders also stressed the necessity of strengthening joint consultations regarding the Libyan crisis, with the goal of facilitating presidential and legislative elections and unifying the country’s military institutions.
Sisi expressed his belief that success in achieving security and political stability in Libya could serve as a model for other countries in the region, given their understanding of the complexities and the ways to resolve existing differences in the country.
In addition to discussing regional issues, the two presidents assured their mutual interest in cooperating for Africa’s development and working together to foster stability and prosperity on the continent.
The conclusion of the meeting saw President Sisi accepting President Erdoğan’s invitation to visit Turkey in April, with the aim of further enhancing relations between the two countries across various fields in a manner that aligns with their shared history and cultural heritage.
Overall, the signing of these agreements and the joint commitment of the two leaders signify a significant step forward in Egypt-Turkey relations, paving the way for strengthened cooperation and enhanced diplomatic ties between the two nations.
