Minister of Education and Technical Education in Egypt, Reda Hegazy, recently made a significant announcement regarding this year’s Thanaweya Amma final exams. These exams, a critical stage in the education system of Egypt, are taken by students between the ages of 17 and 18 in their final years of high school. The results of these exams can determine not only if a student is admitted to a free public university but also what course of study they are eligible for.

Hegazy explained that the upcoming Thanaweya Amma exams will be based on the open book system. This means that students will receive a concept booklet at the beginning of each exam, which they will then hand over to the invigilator at the end of the test. The focus of these exams will be on measuring basic learning outcomes, with questions designed to be progressively challenging while avoiding unnecessary complexity.

One of the main goals of implementing this new open book system is to give students who did not achieve satisfactory scores in previous exams the opportunity to retake them. The Ministry of Education has also revealed details about the 2024 high school exam system. Students will be able to apply for these exams if they have not exceeded four years of taking the high school completion certificate exams, as per the law.

The 2024 high school exam questions will consist of about 85% multiple-choice questions and 15% essay questions. The questions will cover different cognitive levels, with 30% being at a simple level, 40% at an intermediate level, and 30% at a higher level. These questions will be drawn from question banks prepared by the National Center for Examinations and Educational Evaluation, ensuring a standardized exam experience for all students across the country.

Students taking the 2024 high school exams will receive a question booklet, a bubble sheet booklet for multiple-choice answers, and another booklet specifically for answering essay questions. The Ministry of Education has emphasized the importance of obtaining information only from official sources to avoid misinformation.

Overall, the changes in the high school exam system in Egypt reflect a commitment to providing a fair and equitable evaluation process for students. By implementing the open book system and ensuring standardized exams, the Ministry aims to support student success and academic growth in the country.
