The Minister of Education and Technical Education in Egypt, Reda Hegazy, recently announced that this year’s Thanaweya Amma final exams will be adopting the open book system. Thanaweya Amma exams are crucial for students in their final years of high school, typically between the ages of 17 and 18 in Egypt. The results of these exams can determine whether a student is admitted to a free public university and what course they are eligible to study.
Hegazy clarified that students will be provided with a concept booklet at the beginning of each exam, which they will then hand over to the exam invigilator upon completion. The focus of these exams will be on questions that assess basic learning outcomes, with a gradual increase in the levels of difficulty while avoiding unnecessary complexity.
The introduction of this new system aims to give students the opportunity to retake high school exams if they did not achieve a satisfactory score in their previous attempt. The ministry has also outlined the rules for the 2024 high school exam system, stating that students can only take the exam up to four times in accordance with the law. Additionally, students can choose to take the exam either within their school as regular students or as home students, provided they meet the criteria.
The format of the 2024 high school exam questions will consist of 85 percent multiple-choice questions and 15 percent essay questions. The distribution of questions will be as follows: 30 percent for simple cognitive and mental levels, 40 percent for intermediate levels, and 30 percent for higher levels. Questions for these exams will be sourced from question banks prepared by the National Center for Examinations and Educational Evaluation, ensuring a standardized exam for all students nationwide.
Students taking the 2024 high school exams will be provided with a question booklet, a bubble sheet booklet for multiple-choice answers, and another booklet for essay questions. The ministry has urged students and parents to only seek information from official sources to avoid misinformation.
In conclusion, the implementation of the open book system for Thanaweya Amma final exams and the guidelines set for the 2024 high school exam system aim to provide students with a fair and standardized assessment process. These changes are intended to support students in achieving their academic goals and ensuring equal opportunities for all.
