The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has teamed up with the Egyptian government to launch a groundbreaking initiative to transform 6th of October into a green city. This collaborative effort aims to implement a comprehensive plan with the involvement of relevant government agencies and the 6th of October City Authority. The project aligns with Egypt’s ongoing commitment to transitioning towards a green and sustainable economy and falls under the Green Cities Program, a joint initiative between the government and the EBRD.
Egypt and the EBRD share a strong partnership, with the new project forming part of their joint strategy for 2022-2026. Rania al-Mashat, the Minister of International Cooperation and Governor of Egypt at the EBRD, highlighted the significance of cooperation with the bank in advancing the Green Cities Program. This collaboration reflects the close ties between Egypt and the EBRD and underscores Egypt’s efforts to build international partnerships for a green economy. The initiative also supports the implementation of the National Climate Change Strategy 2050, nationally determined contributions, and the Sustainable Development Goals.
The plan for the transformation of 6th of October includes a range of pioneering projects across various sectors, with investments and funding being mobilized to support their implementation. Mashat noted that through international partnerships, the first dry port project in Egypt was financed in 6th of October City with funding from the EBRD and in partnership with both the governmental and private sectors. This project represents a significant step towards achieving the city’s green objectives.
The overarching goal of the initiative is to address environmental challenges and infrastructure-related issues in 6th of October City, supporting its transition to a green, low-carbon future. The plan serves as a strategic roadmap that outlines the implementation of “core pivotal projects” to realize the city’s vision. The Green City Action Plan (GCAP) plays a crucial role in this transformation, identifying 14 major projects across key sectors and supported by 17 long-term initiatives. The aim is to establish 6th of October City as a leading Egyptian city that promotes sustainability, green investment, digital transformation, and holistic growth.
The program also offers a platform for international financial institutions to support sustainable projects, with the EBRD providing 25 million euros in financing for the establishment of the first dry port in Egypt. This project is expected to serve as a catalyst for the broader green city action plan, demonstrating the potential for impactful collaboration between the public and private sectors in driving sustainable development.
In conclusion, the partnership between Egypt and the EBRD in transforming 6th of October into a green city represents a significant milestone in Egypt’s journey towards sustainability and economic development. Through strategic planning, innovative projects, and international cooperation, the initiative aims to create a model city that embodies the principles of green growth and environmental stewardship.
