The New Cairo Public Prosecution has made the decision to send the Uber driver accused of trying to kidnap Habiba al-Shamaa to the Criminal Court. The tragic incident occurred on March 14, when Shamaa, a 23-year-old woman, jumped out of the moving car in an attempt to escape the driver. Unfortunately, she fell into a coma and subsequently passed away.

The victim’s family, friends, and relatives gathered to bid farewell to Shamaa, laying her body to rest in the family cemetery in Al-Wafaa wal-Amal in Nasr City, Cairo. The funeral prayer took place at the Police Mosque in the Fifth Settlement, where emotions ran high as loved ones mourned the untimely loss.

Following investigations into the matter, the Ministry of Interior released a statement confirming that the Shorouk Police Station in the Cairo Security Directorate had received a report from a hospital regarding the victim’s condition. She had sustained head injuries and was unable to provide a statement at that time.

A witness, residing in the same area as the victim, recounted the harrowing events leading up to Shamaa’s tragic fall. While driving along the Suez Road, the witness noticed the victim throwing herself out of the back door of a moving car. He promptly stopped to offer assistance, and Shamaa revealed that the Uber driver had made unwanted advances towards her, prompting her escape.

Subsequently, the victim was rushed to the hospital for medical attention, and the authorities swiftly apprehended the driver, who had a history of criminal behavior. In his defense, the driver claimed that Shamaa had jumped out of the car unexpectedly after he had closed the windows and sprayed air freshener inside. Fearing repercussions, he opted to continue driving rather than stop at the scene of the incident.

The heartbreaking sequence of events has left a community in mourning and raised questions about the safety of ridesharing services like Uber. The public outcry following Shamaa’s tragic demise has underscored the need for enhanced safety measures and stringent background checks for drivers operating within the industry.

As the case moves to the Criminal Court, the hope for justice and accountability looms large. The memory of Habiba al-Shamaa lives on in the hearts of those who knew her, a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safeguarding individuals from harm in the pursuit of convenience and efficiency. The pursuit of justice for Shamaa serves as a testament to a society’s unwavering commitment to protecting its members and upholding the values of safety and security for all.
