The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) has issued a warning that a cold snap is expected to last in Egypt until February 7. The authority stated that the cold weather will be prevalent during the day and will become particularly chilly during the night and early morning hours.
This time period signifies the end of ‘Tobi’, the fifth month of the ancient Egyptian and Coptic calendars. In the Gregorian calendar, ‘Tobi’ falls between January 9 and February 7, and is known as the peak of cold weather in Egypt.
According to weather maps, temperatures are predicted to continue dropping across all areas, including the new cities of Greater Cairo, where they could reach as low as seven degrees Celsius. Some areas, such as St. Catherine and Nakhl in North Sinai, may even experience temperatures below zero.
The EMA has attributed the sharp and rapid fluctuations in weather conditions to an air depression on the surface of the Mediterranean Sea, centered on the island of Cyprus. This is coupled with very cold air masses coming from southern Europe.
For Saturday’s weather forecast, cold weather is expected to prevail during the day in Greater Cairo, Lower Egypt, the northern coasts, and northern Upper Egypt. However, it will become warmer in South Sinai and southern Upper Egypt. The night and early morning are expected to be extremely cold throughout the country.
Frost is forecast to form on crops in central Sinai, northern Upper Egypt, and the New Valley Governorate. The minimum temperature for Greater Cairo is projected to range from six to seven degrees Celsius. Additionally, there is a possibility of snow forming on the peaks of the St. Catherine Mountains, where the minimum temperature could drop below zero.
There is also a chance of light to moderate rainfall in areas of the northwestern coasts and northern Lower Egypt, with an approximate 30 percent probability in areas of the northeastern coasts and the Red Sea mountain ranges.
