Egypt: CAPMAS reports inflation in Egypt rising to 36% in February

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) recently released a report detailing the current state of inflation in Egypt. According to the report, annual inflation stood at 36 percent in February compared to the previous year. This sharp increase was attributed to rising prices in various sectors, with some experiencing significant jumps in cost.

The report highlighted the following increases in specific groups:

– The meat and poultry group saw a 25 percent increase
– Cereals and bread prices went up by 14.2 percent
– Fish and seafood rose by 11.5 percent
– Dairy, cheese, and eggs saw a 12.8 percent increase
– Oils and fats had a 14.1 percent increase
– Fruits experienced a 7.3 percent increase
– Vegetables saw a 9.2 percent increase
– Sugar and sugary foods rose by 6.9 percent
– Coffee, tea, and cocoa had an 11.3 percent increase
– Tobacco products saw an 8.5 percent increase
– Ready-made clothing prices increased by 4.4 percent
– Shoes saw a 3.2 percent increase
– Water and miscellaneous services related to housing rose by 10.7 percent
– Furniture, fixtures, carpets, and other floor coverings increased by 8.6 percent
– Household appliances saw a 7.4 percent increase
– Medical products, devices, and equipment had a 17.3 percent increase
– Vehicle purchases rose by 4.8 percent
– Cultural and entertainment services increased by 9.8 percent
– Newspapers, books, and stationery prices jumped by 55.3 percent
– Pre-primary and basic education prices rose by 10.2 percent
– General and technical secondary education prices increased by 6.5 percent
– Post-secondary and technical education prices rose by 6.9 percent
– Higher education saw a 32.5 percent increase
– Ready-made meals prices went up by 11.8 percent
– Hotel services increased by 9.8 percent

Moreover, the monthly inflation rate for Egypt in February reached 11 percent, compared to 1.7 percent in January. The report also noted significant changes in various sectors at the monthly level. For instance, other food products saw a 34.0 percent increase, while the mineral and carbonated water and natural juices group rose by 6.4 percent.

In the healthcare division, prices increased by 11.3 percent, driven by a rise in the products group, medical devices, and equipment prices by 17.3 percent, outpatient services by 4.2 percent, and hospital services by 4.3 percent.

This data underscores the challenges that Egyptians are currently facing due to the increase in inflation across various sectors of the economy. As prices continue to rise, it becomes increasingly important for individuals and families to manage their budgets carefully and seek ways to mitigate the impact of higher costs on their daily lives.
