Egyptian lawyer Ashraf Nagy recently filed a report with the Public Prosecutor on behalf of a group of concerned parents regarding a German international school in Cairo. The report alleged that the school’s teaching materials were promoting homosexuality, causing outrage among the parents.

In an interview with the “Akkher al-Nahar” (End of the Day) show, Nagy expressed his shock at discovering materials promoting homosexuality in biology books intended for students in the sixth and ninth grades of primary school. According to Nagy, the school administration instructed parents to tear out these pages and sign a declaration acknowledging the presence of these materials in the curriculum while claiming they were not actively taught.

Nagy highlighted that the school follows the same educational curriculum as schools in Germany, where homosexuality is not criminalized. Despite some teachers refusing to teach these controversial subjects, the German administration reportedly replaces them with others who undergo training programs to deliver the lessons.

Seeking swift action, Nagy urged for an expedited investigation and requested a review of the study materials attached to his report to facilitate the necessary legal measures against the school.

In response to the controversy, the Ministry of Education and Technical Education issued an official statement addressing the situation. Following the end of the Eid al-Fitr holiday, Reda Hegazy, the Minister of Education and Technical Education, directed the formation of a committee comprising leaders from the international education department and ministry officials to visit the school, assess the situation, and take immediate legal action if any violations were confirmed.

The Ministry unequivocally stated its complete rejection of any educational institution in Egypt that promotes or teaches subjects conflicting with the moral values upon which Egyptian society is built. Emphasizing the importance of providing students with a morally sound upbringing, the Ministry pledged to prioritize this aspect of education.

This incident underscores the importance of upholding cultural and societal values within the educational system. It highlights the need for vigilance in ensuring that teaching materials align with the values and beliefs of the local community. The actions taken by both the lawyer and the Ministry demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding the moral integrity of the educational environment and upholding the principles that are integral to the society. It serves as a reminder of the critical role that education plays in shaping future generations and the responsibility that educators bear in imparting knowledge in a manner that respects cultural norms and societal standards.
