The Ecos-Tchad Association and its partners organized on Saturday, March 16, 2024, an environmental education day for the students of the Saint Benoît de Gassi high school in the 7th district of the city of NDjamena.
“This environmental education day was organized to raise awareness among students about Zakouma National Park, environmental protection, and also to teach them how to ensure the prosperity of species,” said Ecos-Tchad Coordinator Sem Seka.
For Assiam Angel, Communication Coordinator for the African Parks Network, this activity is a logical continuation of others already carried out in some schools, where students have participated in open days dedicated to the environment. “We were asked to do something more practical and concrete, so that’s why we are here. Our goal is to make accessible what is not known to the students and also to bring them a little bit of the notion of citizenship,” she said.
The day was marked by several presentations related to environmental protection. Abdoul Marty David, coordinator of the UNESCO Associated Schools Network in Chad, talked to the students about nursery techniques and maintenance. For him, students should know not only the theory of planting trees, but also how to maintain them to protect the environment.
Ahmat Abaya Abdramane, Biodiversity Expert and director in charge of forests at the Ministry of Environment, gave a presentation to the students on climate change, its causes and consequences, and the steps taken by States to curb this phenomenon.
After giving examples showing that our climate can be disrupted by our own activities, Ahmat Abaya Abdramane mentioned as efforts of communities to cope with climate change, the Rio Summit in Brazil which led to the signing of the Convention on Climate Change. According to him, in order to stop the change, environmental education sessions are necessary.
