The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has thrown its weight behind Professor Odion Akhaine as the preferred candidate for the Edo State gubernatorial election. In a statement by the Executive Director of the group, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC advocated for Professor Akhaine’s candidacy due to his past role as the General Secretary of the Campaign for Democracy (CD), a prominent organization that fought against military rule in the 90s.
The statement, issued by Professor Akintola, expressed the group’s keen interest in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State, emphasizing the significance of Professor Akhaine’s candidature. Despite not being a Muslim, MURIC expressed its desire to back Professor Akhaine, citing his momentous role in the struggle for democracy in Nigeria as a key factor in its decision.
MURIC noted that several pro-democracy activists who fought for Nigeria’s democracy have been sidelined by those currently in positions of power. The group stressed the importance of recognizing and supporting individuals like Professor Akhaine, who played a pivotal role in the fight against military dictatorship in Nigeria.
In addition to MURIC’s backing of Professor Akhaine, the endorsement of Dennis Idahosa, the member representing Ovia Federal constituency in the House of Representatives, further demonstrates the growing support for specific candidates. The group United For Greater Edo (UFGE) highlighted Idahosa’s capacity, political sagacity, and experience, positioning him as the most viable candidate to secure victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming governorship election.
UFGE pointed to Idahosa’s track record and ability to deliver results as compelling reasons to support his candidacy. The group’s endorsement underscored Idahosa’s popularity and capability to bring in votes for the APC, firmly positioning him as the party’s surest bet for victory.
The support for both Professor Odion Akhaine and Dennis Idahosa reflects the intense competition and strategic endorsements shaping the race for the Edo State governorship, as different groups and individuals throw their weight behind their preferred candidates.
