Women have been cautioned against providing inaccurate information, particularly regarding their age, in the upcoming National Population and Housing Census 2024. Ms Lydia Wanyoto, the chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) women’s league, emphasized that women often conceal their age and provide inconsistent data, leading to their exclusion from certain government programs.

Wanyoto highlighted the discrepancies in age information on different documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, and workplace records, undermining government planning based on age groups. She stressed the importance of accuracy in data collection to ensure effective program implementation aligned with demographic statistics.

Speaking at a press briefing ahead of International Women’s Day celebrations at the party headquarters in Kampala, Wanyoto warned that misleading information during census operations hampers the government’s ability to cater to the needs of its citizens. She pointed out the common practice among women of changing their names after marriage without following legal procedures, urging them to update their status in the government database to maintain accurate records.

Furthermore, Ms Rebecca Kadaga, the second national vice chairperson of NRM, encouraged women to participate in the party’s upcoming membership registration drive starting next month. Kadaga emphasized that registering and keeping membership records updated would allow women to take part in NRM primaries and the upcoming general election, ensuring their active involvement in political processes.

Ms Rosemary Namayanja, the party’s deputy secretary general, acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by women as the country observes International Women’s Day on March 8. Namayanja highlighted issues such as workplace discrimination, sexual harassment, and exploitation of women’s education and skills for personal gain, emphasizing the need for immediate action to address these injustices.

As Uganda prepares to mark International Women’s Day in Katakwi District on March 8, 2024, the chosen theme of “Accelerating Gender Equality through Women’s Economic Empowerment” reflects the country’s commitment to promoting women’s rights and enhancing their economic opportunities. The event will serve as a platform to address the persistent barriers and inequalities faced by women in various aspects of their lives, aiming to empower them and create a more inclusive society.
