Novak Djokovic faced a tough challenge in the Australian Open on Wednesday, narrowly defeating local favorite Alexander Popyrin to advance to the third round. The victory keeps him on course for a record 25th Grand Slam title.

Despite the odds, the world’s number one player showcased his unwavering mental strength to defeat his inspired opponent in a grueling match that lasted over three hours. This came after a challenging first-round match where he spent over four hours on the court against Dino Prizmic. Djokovic later admitted he was feeling unwell at the time.

Following his victory over Popyrin, Djokovic acknowledged that his opponent had played better for part of the match but stated that the momentum turned during the third-set tie-break. Although he acknowledged that he had yet to reach peak form, the Serbian player recognized the quality of his opponents in the early rounds and emphasized the importance of finding a way to win.

While Djokovic initially dominated the first set, he faced increased unforced errors in the second, resulting in him being broken for the first time in the fourth game. Despite opportunities to level the match, Djokovic struggled to find his groove but managed to secure the win after a tense third set and took control of the match.

The pivotal moment came in the 10th game of the third set when Djokovic faced set points from Popyrin. Despite the pressure, he held his ground and won the set, ultimately sealing the match in the fourth set.

Djokovic, who currently holds 24 Grand Slam titles, is determined to clinch an 11th Australian Open title, aiming to surpass Margaret Court and solidify his position as the most decorated player in men’s tennis. His next opponent will be Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

The victory over Popyrin underscores Djokovic’s resilience and determination as he continues his pursuit of tennis greatness at the Australian Open.
