Failure to respect Burkina symbols is punishable by imprisonment (Grand Chancellery)

Ouagadougou, March 16, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – Failure to respect Burkina Faso symbols carries a penalty of two months to two years in prison, the Grand Chancellery of the Burkinabe Orders informed students on Saturday.

The Grand Chancellery of the Burkinabe Orders organized a conference on Burkina symbols for students from the Charles Lavigerie Technical High School in Kamboinsin, in district No. 9 of the city of Ouagadougou on Saturday.

During the event, the Director of Communications and Press Relations (DCRP), Kévin Gauthier Kaboré, of the institution, told students that in case of non-compliance with the state symbols, offenders face a prison sentence of 2 months to 2 years.

“The state symbols according to the Constitution in Article 34 are the national emblem (flag), coat of arms, national anthem, and national motto. These symbols represent our country and our collective identity,” said Kevin Gautier Kaboré, DCRP of the Grand Chancellery of the Burkinabe Orders.

According to him, the flag comes in various forms. These include the room flag symbolizing the power of the authority (ministries), the funeral flag, vehicle pennant, desk pennant (offices), and popular use pennant.

In addition, Kevin Gautier Kaboré mentioned the national ensign or flag reserved for administrative buildings and embassies.

He explained to the students the constituent elements of the coat of arms, national motto, and national anthem, which constitute a song of victory and salute to the Burkinabe people.

These exchanges aim to familiarize students from the Charles Lavigerie Technical High School in Kamboinsin with the state symbols, he added.

For the head of the Charles Lavigerie Technical High School in Kamboinsin, Rose Somboro, these discussions come at the right time to raise awareness among students about citizenship and civism.

According to Somboro, this meeting will educate future leaders to be good citizens because, she explains, a good citizen must know and respect the institutions and symbols of the state.

“As students, we must make them proud of their country and be good citizens,” she added.

Student Parfait Silga in 4th grade said he learned about concepts such as the national motto, flag, and national anthem.

Similarly, Chérifatou Kaboré in the second year AC2 class said she learned a lot from the discussions.
