Bankole Wellington, more commonly known as Banky W, is a well-known Nigerian singer and music executive. He has recently opened up about how he discovered the superstar, Wizkid, who was once signed to his label, Empire Mates Entertainment.
Contrary to popular belief, Banky W revealed that he did not discover Wizkid through social media, as many had speculated. Instead, he found him in the studio while he was working. Addressing the old tweet from Wizkid asking for a record deal, Banky W clarified that it was simply a joke and that Wizkid was already signed to his label at the time.
In a video message that has been circulating widely, the singer-turned-pastor emphasized the importance of letting God and their helpers find them in the midst of their work. He advised that for some individuals, God would only find them through their tweets, referring to the viral tweet exchange with Wizkid. However, he stressed the fact that he did not discover Wizkid through social media, but rather by hearing his music while listening to a group of unsigned artists.
Banky W went on to explain that the viral exchange of tweets between him and Wizkid was simply a playful interaction, stating, “We were just being playful at the time when those tweets were sent.” He revealed that they had already been working together for about a year before the tweet exchange took place, and that he had heard Wizkid’s music before they officially started working together.
Recalling the early days of their working relationship, Banky W shared how he had come across Wizkid’s talent before he became a household name in the music industry. He mentioned that Wizkid had already recorded a chorus with M.I. before they began working together. Additionally, he mentioned an event where Wizkid was serving as a back-up singer for another artist, Kellz, showcasing his dedication and commitment to his craft even before he gained fame.
Banky W signed Wizkid to Empire Mates Entertainment in 2009, and Wizkid later rose to stardom with the release of his debut studio album, “Superstar,” in 2011. After the success of his sophomore album, ‘Ayo,’ in 2014, Wizkid exited EME to pursue his career independently.
This revelation from Banky W offers insight into the early days of Wizkid’s career and the behind-the-scenes story of how the two artists came to work together. It is a reminder that success often comes from hard work, talent, and dedication, and that sometimes, the public narrative may not always reflect the truth.
