Lance Corporal Kanyako, a military personnel attached to the 3rd Infantry Brigade in Murray Town, tragically shot himself dead in the early hours of Monday, March 11, 2024. The news of his passing shocked his colleagues and the community, as he had served for over 10 years in the military.
Sources within the military reported that Kanyako allegedly used an AK 47 rifle belonging to his colleague, Corporal Kovoma, to end his life. While some speculate that he was shot from the back, others believe that he took his own life. The motive behind Kanyako’s actions remains unclear, as no suicide note was found at the scene. However, it is believed that his suicide may have been linked to a failed ‘promotion for information deal’ involving senior military officers.
According to reports, Kanyako had provided crucial information that led to the arrest of Amadu Koita, a suspected coup plotter involved in the security breaches of November 26, 2023. In exchange for this information, Kanyako was promised a promotion in the next round of promotions. Disappointment set in when his name did not appear on the list, despite reassurances from a Colonel that it would be included on a supplementary list.
The events of November 26, particularly the attack on the Wilberforce Military Barracks, had raised questions about the identities of the assailants. Kanyako’s statement to the authorities played a significant role in identifying Amadu Koita as one of the perpetrators, leading to his eventual arrest. However, the broken promises of a promotion may have contributed to Kanyako’s state of mind and his decision to take his own life.
As investigations into Kanyako’s death continue, key questions have arisen regarding the broken promises of promotion and the circumstances surrounding his suicide. The involvement of senior officers in the failed deal is being scrutinized, along with the role of Corporal Kovoma, who is currently assisting investigators at the Military Police Custodian Centre in Wilberforce.
The loss of Lance Corporal Kanyako has sent shockwaves through the military community, raising concerns about the mental health and well-being of service members. It is a tragic reminder of the toll that the pressures and challenges of military service can take on individuals. As the investigation unfolds, it is hoped that answers will be found to provide closure and justice for all those affected by this heartbreaking incident.
