Jurgen Kohler, a German coach, has officially applied for the vacant coaching position with the Black Stars. This application was submitted to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) before the February 2, 2024 deadline. It was reported that Kohler’s interest in the role was sparked by a formal approach from the GFA, facilitated by its vice president, Mark Addo. Although not a direct job offer, Kohler was left with the impression that he would be considered if he applied, despite his limited coaching experience.

Kohler, who holds a UEFA Pro License, most recently served as a caretaker coach at FC Viktoria Koln in 2019. Despite his lack of extensive top-level coaching experience, his application reflects his eagerness to take on the challenge of leading the Black Stars.

The decision now rests with the five-member search committee as they evaluate the candidates for this crucial coaching position. Kohler has a solid background in football, having managed the German U21 team, served as director of Football at Bayern Leverkusen, managed MSV Duisburg, and worked as the director of football at German third-tier side vfR Aalen. Additionally, during his playing days, Kohler achieved success by winning the World Cup with Germany and the UEFA Champions League with Borussia Dortmund.

Kohler’s application, along with any others that may follow, will be carefully considered by the GFA’s five-member committee tasked with finding the next Black Stars coach. The committee is chaired by GFA Vice President Mark Addo, with legal practitioner Ace Ankomah as his vice. The search for the new coach is ongoing, and the committee will be instrumental in making this important decision for the future of the Black Stars.
