The investigation into the events leading up to the tragic death of World Marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum continues to unfold as the four men who allegedly visited his home prior to the accident are currently being interrogated by detectives. The suspects, who were arrested on Wednesday, are being questioned at Iten Police Station in Elgeyo Marakwet County. County Criminal Investigations Officer Mr Joshua Chelal has confirmed that the four, who were considered ‘strangers’ by the late Kiptum’s family, are recording statements about the visit. It is reported that the suspects had initially been held at Kaptagat Police Station before being transferred to Iten Police Station for further interrogation.
The late Kiptum’s father, Samson Cheruiyot, had expressed concern about the visit of four strangers to his son’s home in Chepsamo village four days before his tragic death. Mr. Cheruiyot had demanded that the four be investigated as they did not properly introduce themselves when they visited his late son’s home. Detectives are currently seeking to understand the nature and motive of the visit by the four men and Mr. Cheruiyot positively identified three of the men at Kaptagat Police Station. The vehicle which the suspects used has been seized and is being held at Kaptagat Police Station in Keiyo South.
Kiptum and his Rwandan coach Gervais Hakizamana died in a serious road crash on Sunday night in Kaptagat area along the Eldoret-Ravine Road. They both died on the spot, while a female passenger, identified as Sharon Kosgey, who was traveling with them, survived with minor injuries and is currently recuperating at home after receiving treatment in the hospital.
A preliminary report by mechanical investigators has ruled out any mechanical problems with Kiptum’s vehicle before the accident, indicating that the vehicle was in good mechanical condition. Elgeyo Marakwet Police Commander Peter Mulinge stated that the examination report showed no evidence of a mechanical breakdown before the crash. However, other aspects of the investigations into the road crash are ongoing, indicating that investigators may be looking into other possible causes of the accident, such as speed. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kiptum’s tragic death remains ongoing as detectives piece together the events leading up to the road crash.
