Vihiga Queens are set to begin a new chapter in the Football Kenya Federation Women’s Premier League (FKF-WPL) after two of their key players joined Uganda Women’s Premier League side Kampala Queens. The reigning champions will be without the services of former captain Mercy Wayodi and Ugandan international Anita Namata, who have moved to Kampala Queens.
Vihiga Queens will be facing off against Kibera Girls Soccer at Moi Stadium in Kisumu in their upcoming league match. The team’s coach, Boniface Nyamunyamuh, expressed his sentiments on the departure of Wayodi and Namata, stating that they are now set to start a new journey in Uganda. Nyamunyamuh also mentioned that the team is planning to sign three more players before the transfer window closes in a week’s time.
Having slipped to second place in the league standings following a 2-2 draw with Ulinzi Starlets in their last match, Vihiga Queens are now preparing to reclaim the top spot when they face Kibera at home. The coach has expressed confidence in the team’s preparedness for the upcoming match, stating that they have planned well even in the absence of the two departed players and are aiming to retain the league title.
The team has also welcomed new additions, with experienced goalkeeper Pauline Kathuruh and midfielders Jenipher Musembi and Miriam Asangira joining Vihiga from Gaspo Women. Kathuruh will be available for selection against Kibera alongside first-choice keeper Susan Akinyi.
Vihiga Queens, who are unbeaten this season, currently have 25 points, tied with league leaders Kenya Police Bullets. They have an inferior goal difference to Bullets, and could reclaim the top spot if they avoid defeat against Kibera on Saturday before the leaders face Bungoma on Sunday. Kibera Girls Soccer currently sit in fourth place with 21 points.
In other league matches, Ulinzi Starlets will face Wadadia Women at Mumias Sports Complex, while Kenya Police Bullets will visit ninth-placed Bungoma Queens as Nakuru City Queens host Zetech Sparks at ASK Show Ground in Nakuru. The match between Gaspo Women and Soccer Assassins has been postponed to a later date due to the involvement of seven players from the Assassins in the national under-17 girls’ team, Junior Starlets.
The players from Soccer Assassins are preparing for the second round of the U-17 World Cup qualifying match against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The FIFA Under 17 World Cup is set for the Dominican Republic from October 16 to November 3.
Finally, the article concludes with a list of upcoming fixtures for the FKF-WPL matches.
