On March 6, 2024, the Democratic Bloc, a faction within Sudan’s Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC), took a significant step by submitting its proposed solution to the ongoing crisis in the country to the African Union’s high-level mechanism. This move aimed to address the pressing issues related to the sovereignty of state institutions and territorial integrity, aligning the Bloc’s position closely with that of the Sudanese military.

The Democratic Bloc engaged in a meeting with the African delegation in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Wednesday. This meeting formed part of the delegation’s continuous consultations with various stakeholders in Sudan throughout the month of March. Mohamed Zakaria, the spokesperson for the Bloc, shared that they presented a written document outlining their vision. This vision emphasized the Bloc’s unwavering support for the Sudanese state, the importance of upholding the sovereignty of its institutions, the preservation of the country’s territorial integrity, and the advancement of the democratic transition.

Zakaria further stressed the need for the African Union to maintain impartiality in its mediation efforts and ensure the inclusion of all relevant parties in the negotiation process. The Democratic Bloc called for the unification of regional and international initiatives to create a more cohesive approach towards resolving the crisis in Sudan.

One key aspect highlighted by Zakaria was the importance of building trust among civilian forces. He emphasized that establishing trust was a crucial step towards initiating a comprehensive Sudanese dialogue with regional and international facilitation, a key principle advocated by the Democratic Bloc.

The African Union’s high-level mechanism, established by the African Union Commission on January 18th, 2024, was tasked with the mission of restoring stability and constitutional order in Sudan. This involved collaboration with both military and civilian actors, as well as engagement with the regional and international community to achieve the desired goal of peace and stability.

Additionally, the Democratic Bloc requested the African Union to enhance its humanitarian efforts and provide relief to those affected by the conflict. This move demonstrated the Bloc’s commitment to addressing not only the political aspects of the crisis but also the humanitarian impact on the population.

In sum, the Democratic Bloc’s submission of its proposed solution to the African Union’s high-level mechanism signified a significant step towards finding a resolution to the ongoing crisis in Sudan. Through their emphasis on upholding state sovereignty, preserving territorial integrity, and advocating for a comprehensive Sudanese dialogue, the Bloc presented a clear and focused vision for addressing the challenges facing the country. The collaborative efforts of all stakeholders, including the African Union, are essential in achieving stability and peace in Sudan.
