Democratic Ohio Rep. Ismail Mohamed, a Somali immigrant, secured victory in the Democratic primary for Ohio’s 3rd House District on Tuesday night, delivering his triumph speech almost entirely in Somali. Mohamed, the incumbent in the district, triumphed over fellow Somali immigrant Abdirizak Diini, garnering 55 percent of the votes compared to Diini’s 33 percent, as reported by the Columbus Dispatch.
This 31-year-old Columbus lawyer made history in 2022 by becoming Ohio’s first Somali lawmaker, alongside Munira Abdullahi, who also emerged victorious in Ohio’s 9th district in the same year. Mohamed’s journey to this position began as a Somali refugee who fled the violence in his home country, sought refuge in Kenya, and eventually arrived in the United States in 2005, as disclosed in an interview with Spectrum News.
A significant part of Mohamed’s campaign focused on representing the substantial Somali population in his district. Columbus is home to over 45,000 Somalis, making it the second-largest Somali community in the United States, trailing only behind Ilhan Omar’s district in Minnesota. He even utilized a Somali-owned state television network to reach out to and connect with his community during his campaign.
Although Mohamed faced defeat in a previous election in 2018 against then-incumbent Democratic Rep. Bernadine Kennedy Kent by a small margin of 658 votes, his 2022 victory was a landslide, clinching about 80 percent of the votes according to the Dispatch. His platform includes advocating for funding towards affordable housing and education, with a goal to champion equitable policies for the betterment of all residents across his district and the state.
His commitment to improving the lives of his constituents and creating a brighter future for all was evident in his victory speech conducted in Somali, reflecting his connection to his roots and the community he represents. Mohamed’s historic win symbolizes progress and inclusivity in the political landscape, showcasing the rich diversity and voices of immigrants in Ohio.
As he embarks on his journey as a representative in Ohio’s 3rd House District, Mohamed’s dedication to serving his community and advocating for crucial issues such as affordable housing and education will undoubtedly make a positive impact on the lives of many. His resounding victory stands as a testament to the power of diversity and representation in shaping a better future for all residents across the state.
