Team Delta is not unfamiliar with success in the National Sports Festival, as they have a rich history of championship titles under their belt. The state recently kicked off a two-month strategic competition/trials for athletes from all the local councils in Asaba, the state capital. This initiative aims to identify and groom talented athletes from across the state and prepare them for the forthcoming National Sports Festival.
The trials, which began yesterday, saw athletes competing in sports such as karate, table tennis, and cricket. With over 800 athletes participating in the program, the state is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to field a strong and competitive team for the upcoming games. According to Festus Ohwojero, the Acting Director General/Chairman of Delta Sports Commission, the trials will not only serve as a platform to test the strength of Team Delta but also ensure that athletes from all 25 Local Government Areas are given the opportunity to showcase their skills.
One of the key objectives of the trials is to address concerns raised by local government coaches regarding the selection process for major competitions. By involving athletes from all the local councils, the state is aiming to promote inclusivity and fair representation of talent. This approach will also help to avoid any complaints from coaches who feel that their athletes are being overlooked in favor of those from the headquarters.
