The body of the young Guinean migrant who died in Italy under unclear circumstances arrived in Conakry on the evening of Monday, April 8. He was welcomed by his family, friends, NGOs who worked for the return of the body, and a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Guineans abroad.
Died in a migrant detention center in Italy, the body of Ousmane Sylla returned to Guinean soil. A long battle fought by several NGOs, including the Guinean Association for the Fight Against Irregular Immigration, to bring the body of this compatriot back.
“On one hand, I can say that it is a feeling of relief that animates me because the family did not even hope to find the body, neither did we. It is the result of a two-month fight. On the other hand, it is a feeling of disappointment that animates me because, imagine, a 22-year-old who went out in search of happiness with his job, to come back in a coffin like that, does not make anyone happy. He first found himself in a host family where he should have been taken care of, but unfortunately, he was not taken care of. That is why he went to complain about the mistreatment he was subjected to in this foster home, because of that, he is mistreated, tortured, and subjected to atrocities that unfortunately drove him to suicide. It is not easy to see our young people die like that,” lamented Elhadj Mohamed Diallo, president of the Association.
“We are in this search process to know the real causes of his death…”
After offering condolences on behalf of his minister Morissanda Kouyaté Mamadou Saytiou Barry, the Director General of Guineans abroad stated that everything is being done to elucidate the circumstances of Ousmane Sylla’s death.
“We are happy today that Ousmane’s body is in Guinea, because it was still one of his wishes, that is, to be repatriated to Guinea and buried here. If God facilitated this, we can only thank God. It is a regret for us to see a young man in the prime of life, pass away in these conditions. Therefore, on behalf of Minister Dr. Morissanda Kouyaté and all the officials of the department, we offer our sincere condolences to the family, the youth, and the entire Guinean diaspora. It is a death that has hurt us all. It should be noted that since February 4, 2024, the day of the death of the young Ousmane Sylla until today, we have been in this search process to know the real causes of his death. It is in this context that the Minister instructed the Guinean Embassy in Italy to work tirelessly to find out the reasons that led to the young man’s death,” he said.
It was recalled that the late’s friends had staged a march from Matoto to the Airport with a banner depicting Ousmane Sylla for the body’s reception. It should also be noted that the burial is scheduled for Tuesday, April 9, 2024, in the family of the deceased in Matoto.
