Former Brazil international footballer Dani Alves has been granted provisional release from jail pending an appeal against his rape conviction upon posting a bail of one million euros ($1.08 million). The Barcelona court made this decision on Wednesday, following a request from his lawyer citing the fact that Alves had already served a quarter of his four-and-a-half-year sentence in pre-trial detention after his arrest in January 2023.
In order to secure his release, the court required Alves to pay a bail of 1,000,000 euros, surrender his Spanish and Brazilian passports, stay in Spain, and report to court on a weekly basis. The public prosecutors had initially opposed his release, expressing concerns about him being a high-flight risk.

The court, in its detailed 61-page ruling, clarified that any prior interaction did not imply consent to what had transpired later.
