The Cultural Heritage Institute, in collaboration with the Maritime and Port Institute, will rehabilitate eight historic lighthouses in Cape Verde with funding from the Spanish Cooperation, through the Spanish Agency for Cooperation and Development (Aecid).

This information was provided in a statement from the Ministry of Culture and Creative Industries, accessed by Inforpress, which explained that the “Lighthouses of Cape Verde” project aims to promote the rehabilitation and enhancement of historic lighthouses, preserving their integrity as a heritage element and maritime safety, and promoting their integration into the national tourist and cultural itinerary through the creation of interpretation spaces, improvement of access and signaling, and the addition of new services at leisure and contemplation areas.

“The project will benefit eight national historic lighthouses – Dona Maria Pia in Praia, Santiago, Ponta Preta Lighthouse in Tarrafal de Santiago, Fontes Pereira de Melo (Boi Lighthouse) in Santo Antão, Don Luis I Lighthouse in São Vicente, Dona Amélia Lighthouse in São Vicente, Morro Negro Lighthouse on Boa Vista Island, São José Lighthouse on Maio Island, East Lighthouse in São Domingos,” it highlighted.

According to the Ministry of Culture, the selected lighthouses represent important historical landmarks that have witnessed centuries of navigation and maritime activity, and the main objective of the project is to preserve the country’s rich maritime history, promoting the diversification of tourist attractions.

Through this project, Cape Verde aims to enhance the historical and cultural value of these lighthouses, ensuring their preservation for future generations and creating new opportunities for tourism and economic development. The integration of these historic sites into the national tourist route will not only attract visitors interested in maritime history but also contribute to the overall promotion of Cape Verde as a unique and culturally rich destination.
