A meeting between Somalia and Ethiopia in Nairobi has resulted in significant news.

The mediation effort by the Kenyan government is aimed at finding a solution to the differences between the governments of Mogadishu and Addis Ababa, with Ethiopia’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent republic playing a key role.

The Somali government has described the agreement as a peace-destroying attack by Ethiopia on the unity and sovereignty of Somalia.

Somaliland has criticized Ethiopia’s recognition, accusing it of undermining the international efforts to recognize Addis Ababa as the first official government.

Kenya’s President, who met with the presidents of Somalia and Ethiopia two weeks ago, is now involved in diplomatic efforts, as reported by The East African newspaper from Nairobi.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was in Nairobi to attend the United Nations Environment Assembly, while Abiy Ahmed made an official visit to Kenya.

The East African newspaper reported that Kenyan President William Ruto is accelerating efforts to resolve the dispute between Somalia and Ethiopia.

It is also suggested that Mogadishu and Addis Ababa will now consider measures to improve their strained relations.

The meeting between the Kenyan president and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty of African nations.

The East African newspaper, citing diplomatic sources, reported that secret talks will continue and a future meeting will be held to further discussions, with both parties committed to resolving the issue through dialogue.

US broadcaster Bloomberg reports that Ethiopia is planning to become a mediator in the recognition of Somaliland, based on several diplomatic sources.

Officials interviewed by the broadcaster stated that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is actively working to involve Ethiopia in the process of recognizing Somaliland, seen as one of the main reasons why Somaliland signed the agreement.

Both Ethiopia and Somaliland have not disputed the report by the broadcaster and are engaging in the ongoing diplomatic discussions involving Kenya.
