The battle for the nomination of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Ondo State is heating up, with aspirants jostling for the late Rotimi Akeredolu’s endorsement. The controversy surrounding Akeredolu’s supposed endorsement of a candidate is overshadowing discussions on the party’s plans for the upcoming dispensation.
As the primary election approaches, a total of 10 aspirants are vying for the APC ticket. Among them, four claim to have been endorsed by Akeredolu to succeed him as governor. These include the incumbent governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, former Commissioner for Finance Wale Akinterinwa, former SSG Princess Oladuni Odu, and Gbenga Oedema, the immediate past NDDC representative for Ondo State.
On the other hand, a group consisting of Prof. Dayo Faduyile, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, Mayowa Akinfolarin, Chief Olusola Oke, Diran Iyantan, Paul Akintelure, and Olamide Ohunyeye vehemently denies the endorsement claims. Faduyile, in particular, emphasizes Akeredolu’s impartiality and commitment to providing a level playing field for all aspirants.
The controversy intensifies with supporters of the incumbent governor citing Akeredolu’s statements at his second inauguration, where he hinted at Aiyedatiwa as his preferred successor. However, discord between Aiyedatiwa and Akeredolu arose during the late governor’s illness, raising doubts about the deputy governor’s loyalty.
Aiyedatiwa maintains that Akeredolu had expressed his desire for Aiyedatiwa to succeed him, despite the political tensions during Akeredolu’s ill health. Akinterinwa also claims to have had Akeredolu’s blessing to run for governor, citing a conversation after the late governor’s return from Germany. Oke, likewise, asserts his intention to run for governor was communicated to Akeredolu and Aiyedatiwa prior to the former governor’s passing.
Oedema echoes a similar sentiment, stating that he informed Akeredolu of his ambition and considers himself best suited to continue Akeredolu’s legacy in Ondo State. Faduyile advocates for a direct mode of primaries, confident that his qualifications and dedication to public service will set him apart from other contenders.
Akinfolarin, a former federal representative, pledges to bring positive change to Ondo State if elected governor, aligning his vision with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu. As the political drama unfolds, the focus shifts from substantive issues to personal ambitions and backstage maneuvering.
In conclusion, the race for the APC governorship ticket in Ondo State is rife with controversy and power struggles. The legacy of the late Rotimi Akeredolu looms large as aspirants seek to position themselves as the rightful heirs to his political mantle. Beyond the drama of endorsements and alliances, the real test lies in the ability of the party to nominate a strong, viable candidate who can lead Ondo State to greater heights in the next dispensation.
