Players and officials of the Super Eagles are expressing concerns over the injury sustained by first choice goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, during Nigeria’s round of 16 match against Cameroon. There is apprehension that Nwabali may not be fit to play in the team’s upcoming quarterfinal match against Angola.

Nwabali was injured after a collision with Cameroon’s Georges-Kevin N’koudou as he went up to catch a cross towards the end of the game, which Nigeria won 2-0. He was subsequently replaced by Francis Uzoho, who had previously been the team’s first choice goalkeeper before Nwabali’s emergence less than three months ago. Uzoho’s performance since becoming Super Eagles’ goalkeeper in 2018 has been underwhelming, so Nwabali’s injury potentially poses a significant setback for the team.

Coach Jose Peseiro stated that he would only be able to determine the severity of Nwabali’s injury approximately 48 hours after the game. He expressed hope that Nwabali would recover in time for the next game, but acknowledged that the doctors working on the Chippa United goalkeeper would provide a better assessment of the situation.

Peseiro underlined the importance of the upcoming match against Angola, describing them as one of the most dangerous sides in the competition. He emphasized the need for the team to remain focused and attentive in their preparations. Meanwhile, Nwabali conveyed his optimism about being ready for the next game, despite feeling some muscular pains and awaiting the doctors’ assessment.

The team has been granted a two-day break before resuming training for the quarterfinal clash with Angola. Peseiro commended Victor Osimhen for his performance in the match against Cameroon and stressed the significance of the upcoming game.

Ultimately, the Super Eagles are anxiously waiting for more information about Nwabali’s injury and hoping for his swift recovery to be available for the crucial match against Angola.
