The image presents a list of the ten least visited countries in the world, ranked by the number of visitors per year. The Comoros ranks ninth with 45,000 visitors. Despite this position, it seems that there is no clear and ambitious tourism policy for the Comoros. The airfares to get there are expensive, which poses a significant barrier for potential tourists, including the Comorian diaspora.
The Comorian diaspora could be a much larger source of visitors. However, it is often perceived that the State sees them more as a source of revenue — “cash cows” — without developing an optimized strategy to maximize this contribution. The solution does not solely lie in increasing the number of visitors, but also in improving the quality of their experience, which could result in increased tourism revenues.
One strategy could be to reduce the cost of airfares, possibly through subsidies or partnerships with airlines. Additionally, a sponsorship system managed by the diaspora could be established, offering benefits to sponsors and tourists, such as discounts on accommodations, transportation, or cultural activities. This would create a virtuous circle encouraging the diaspora to actively promote tourism in their home country.
To transform the metaphor of the “cash cow” into a success story, the Comoros must rethink their approach to tourism. A thoughtful and well-executed tourism policy could not only increase the number of visitors but also improve the country’s image internationally, enhance the tourist experience, and, in turn, strengthen the national economy.
