In the recent global happiness ranking, Madagascar and the Comoros hold the lowest positions within the Indian Ocean region, prompting a reflection on the criteria of well-being and satisfaction in these countries. This ranking, published last week and supported by the United Nations, highlights regional disparities in happiness, evaluating countries on various aspects such as optimism for the future, perception of corruption, and standard of living.
While Reunion and Mayotte are not included due to their status as French departments, France itself ranks 27th, behind nations like the United States, Germany, and Mexico. Mauritius stands out in the Indian Ocean region, ranking 70th, ahead of South Africa (83rd) and Mozambique (90th). notably absent from the ranking, the Seychelles and the Maldives do not feature.
Among the countries with the lowest rankings, Madagascar is at the 123rd position, followed by Tanzania (131st) and the Comoros, which occupy the last regional position at 132nd place. These results invite introspection on the living conditions and challenges faced by the populations of these nations.
The top of this ranking is dominated by Nordic countries, with Finland in the first position, once again highlighting the association between social welfare policies and the perceived level of happiness by citizens. Finland is closely followed by Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden, echoing the lyrics of Christophe Maé’s song “Quest for happiness” which seems to be found in the warm welcome of the north.
