As Comorians prepare for the sacred month of Ramadan in the midst of record inflation, employees of Comoros Airports (Adc) are facing an unprecedented financial crisis. For three months, from December 2023 to February, these workers have not received a penny of their salary. This alarming situation has reached a critical point, as evidenced by a photo circulating on social media showing an employee holding a sign demanding their rights, thus denouncing this unsustainable precarity.

For the employees, this situation is not only unbearable financially, but it also hinders their personal and family projects. Unpaid salaries represent a major obstacle in their daily lives, forcing them to struggle with transportation difficulties and to make ends meet.

In response to this crisis, the management of Adc acknowledges the presence of unpaid wages. Maamoune Chakira, the company’s boss, has promised that the salary for December 2023 will be paid this week, with the assurance that other payments will follow as soon as possible. He also pointed out the structural issues that have contributed to this situation, particularly an excessive payroll inherited from his predecessors.

Chakira emphasized that the payroll accounts for nearly 75% of the company’s revenue, well above acceptable standards. He attributed this situation to massive hiring since 2012, without taking into account the actual evolution of the company’s activities. To address this crisis, Chakira is considering reforms aimed at reducing the payroll by focusing on essential airport operation jobs and outsourcing others.

However, these reforms have been delayed due to the unstable political context in recent months. Despite the challenges, Chakira remains optimistic about the possibility of overcoming these obstacles by collaborating with the staff and the government to ensure a harmonious development of airport activities.
