Nigerian comedian Oghenekowhoyan Onaibe Desmond, widely known as Destalker, recently shared his personal struggle with depression and thoughts of suicide. After graduating with a degree in Public Administration, Destalker found himself unable to secure a job in his field and resorted to working as a commercial motorcyclist.
The pressure of not being able to find a stable job, combined with familial expectations and societal frustrations, took a toll on Destalker’s mental health. In a candid discussion on the Afrobeats Podcast, Destalker revealed the challenges he faced during this difficult period.
“I graduated with a degree in Public Administration but couldn’t get a job. So I started doing okada [commercial motorcyclist]. But the truth is, I already had it on my mind that I don’t want to work for anybody. You must have a blueprint of what you want to become even though the country has its own blueprint waiting for you,” Destalker shared.
As he navigated through the uncertainties of his career and personal life, Destalker found himself battling with depression. The comedian admitted that the struggle wasn’t easy, and at one point, he even attempted suicide three times. Reflecting on those dark moments, Destalker realized the importance of holding onto hope and believing that better days were ahead.
“I was struggling. It wasn’t easy. There were a lot of distractions and it got to a point where I was suicidal. I attempted suicide three times. I think nobody has heard this part of me. That was when I realised that even I can’t take my life. I now believed that when you’re suicidal, your miracle is close. The devil doesn’t just want you to attain it. The closer you are to your destiny, the difficult the challenges. That was my story,” Destalker revealed.
In his journey towards healing and self-discovery, Destalker found support and encouragement from his colleague, Ajebo. It was Ajebo who played a pivotal role in facilitating Destalker’s first major breakthrough in the comedy industry. With Ajebo’s help and guidance, Destalker was able to step into the spotlight and showcase his talents to a larger audience.
Destalker’s story serves as a powerful reminder that even in the midst of darkness, there is always hope for a brighter future. His resilience and determination to overcome his struggles are a testament to the strength of the human spirit. Through his openness and vulnerability, Destalker has inspired others to never give up on their dreams, no matter how difficult the journey may seem.
As Destalker continues to share his comedic genius with the world, he also carries with him a message of hope and resilience. His journey from battling depression and thoughts of suicide to finding success in the comedy industry is a testament to the power of perseverance and belief in oneself.
