Stand-up comedian, Oghenekowhoyan Onaibe Desmond, widely known as Destalker, recently shared an interesting anecdote from his early days in the comedy industry. He revealed that his colleague, FunnyBone, once predicted that he would not have a long-lasting career in comedy. According to Destalker, FunnyBone told him that he would fade away within six months of starting out.
This revelation came to light during Destalker’s guest appearance on the Afrobeats Podcast, which is hosted by Shopsydoo. Recounting the incident, Destalker mentioned that after he won his first Best Comedian of the Year award, he noticed a change in his colleagues’ behavior towards him. FunnyBone, in particular, made a rather bold statement about Destalker’s future in comedy.
Destalker recalled, “FunnyBone said, ‘What does he feel like? Let’s give him 6 months.’ He didn’t know I was sitting close to him when he said it loud.” This comment from FunnyBone seemed to imply skepticism about Destalker’s longevity in the industry. Despite the discouraging forecast, Destalker remained unfazed.
He continued, “He said, ‘Abeg! Six months he will go down.’ Listen, you cannot give time for what God has timed.” Destalker’s faith in his own abilities and in a higher power seemed to guide him through this challenging period. FunnyBone even went on to mention another comedian, Akpororo, as an example of someone who, in his opinion, had not sustained his success in the long run.
However, Destalker’s resilience and talent ultimately prevailed. He shared, “I said, ‘Okay, let’s see if it’s God’s time or man’s time.’ I won the same award for four consecutive years.” Destalker’s consistent success in the comedy industry proved that determination and belief in oneself can often outweigh the doubts and predictions of others.
