Climate change in Burkina Faso: Local governments trained on climate finance
Bobo-Dioulasso, (Africa Links 24) – The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in collaboration with the Green Climate Fund, trained local governments on climate information and climate finance in Bobo-Dioulasso from March 11 to 12, 2024. This training aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of participants in the fight against climate change.
Local governments, namely members of the regional and municipal councils of the Hauts-Bassins region, were trained on the challenges of climate change and on policies and mechanisms put in place to mobilize the necessary funding for this purpose.
There were 25 participants from different locations in the region for this session.
This training opportunity was offered to them by the IUCN through its preparatory project, “Strengthening the technical and operational capacities of the NDA (National Designated Authority) and its network to provide strategic support to actors in Green Climate Fund activities in Burkina Faso.”
This project is supported by the Green Climate Fund. It aims to strengthen the technical and operational capacities of the executive secretariat of the NDA in Burkina Faso and its network so that they can provide effective support for the development and implementation of adaptation and mitigation actions to climate change in Burkina Faso.
As part of the implementation of this program, thirteen awareness sessions on climate information are planned in the thirteen regions of Burkina Faso in 2024 to enhance the knowledge of these actors on adaptation efforts to climate change and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions.
It is in this context that those from the Hauts-Bassins region were trained for two days on current manifestations and projections on climate change in Burkina Faso or on generalities on climate finance.
Yaya Sanou, the Director of Cabinet of the Regional Council of Hauts-Bassins, praised the holding of the session because it was an opportunity to discuss innovative solutions to address the challenges of climate change in the region.
The project manager at IUCN in Burkina Faso, Bassourou Boyla, echoed the same sentiment.
According to him, it is through the combination of all efforts that we will be able to build a more sustainable and resilient future for Burkina Faso and the planet as a whole, hence the initiative of the session.
“The overall objective of this session is to enhance the knowledge of actors in the Hauts-Bassins region on adaptation efforts to climate change and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. Through this initiative, we aim to reduce information gaps between central and local administrations as well as between scientists and local communities on climate actions in our country,” highlighted Mr. Boyla.
This training, added Nebyida Kaboré, the national designated authority of the Green Climate Fund, is welcome.
It has allowed the actors closest to the populations to acquire the basics to formulate projects related to climate in order to access funding from the Green Climate Fund.
