Veteran Nigerian singer Charly Boy recently shared a story about how he intervened in a situation involving fellow musician Eedris Abdulkareem and American rapper 50 Cent back in 2004. The singer recounted the incident in a recent episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, revealing that he was styling his hair when he received a call from Abdulkareem saying that he was being mistreated by 50 Cent’s bouncers.
Charly Boy immediately dropped what he was doing and mobilized a group of men on three thousand bikes to head to the Murtala Muhammed Airport where Abdulkareem was located. Upon arrival, he was briefed by Abdulkareem about the altercation and quickly went to confront 50 Cent.
The singer recalled the events, stating, “Back then, if I was walking past the motorcycle park and I waved my hand, all the motorcyclists would follow me. So, I stormed the airport with almost 3000 bikes.” He went on to explain that Abdulkareem informed him that he had been booked for a show alongside 50 Cent and was sitting in the first-class section of the plane, which led to a confrontation with the rapper’s bouncers. He refused to leave the first-class space, and as a result, he and his bouncer were beaten by 50 Cent’s team.
Once Charly Boy was made aware of the situation, he sought out 50 Cent and confronted him directly. “After Eedris narrated his ordeal, I asked where 50 Cent was, and they pointed to an SUV. So I went into the SUV to confront him. Already, 50 Cent’s security team was seeing the tension around the airport with the bike men moving around. I was also very high that day. I said to 50 Cent, ‘You are the one beating my people in their own country? You came to Nigeria and you are beating my people,’” he recalled.
According to Charly Boy, his confrontation prompted an apology from 50 Cent, diffusing the tense situation.
It’s clear from Charly Boy’s account that he felt a strong sense of responsibility to stand up for his fellow Nigerian artist in the face of mistreatment. His swift and bold actions along with the mobilization of a large group of supporters showed his dedication to protecting his community and ensuring that visiting artists respected and honored local talent.
This story highlights the importance of standing up for one another, even in high-stakes situations, and the impact that solidarity and unity within a community can have. Charly Boy’s efforts to defend a fellow artist against mistreatment serve as a reminder of the power of support and advocacy, especially in the face of adversity. As a well-respected figure in the Nigerian music industry, his actions set an example for others to follow, reinforcing the idea that artists should be treated with respect regardless of their nationality or status.
Ultimately, Charly Boy’s intervention in the Eedris Abdulkareem and 50 Cent saga is a testament to the value of camaraderie and standing up for what is right, exemplifying the qualities of leadership and advocacy that have solidified his reputation in the Nigerian music scene. It’s a story that serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of standing together in the face of injustice.
