Former minister of communications, Adebayo Shittu, was interviewed by ROTIMI AGBOLUAJE where he expressed his disagreement with the clamor for a return to the parliamentary system of government. Instead, he emphasized the need to give President Bola Tinubu time to address the economic challenges inherited from previous administrations.

Shittu highlighted the differences between the parliamentary and presidential systems of government, noting that the presidential system provides more stability and accountability. He compared the process of governance to running a business, emphasizing the importance of planning, resource deployment, and time to achieve positive outcomes.

Regarding the hardship faced by Nigerians under the APC government, Shittu defended President Tinubu, stating that tackling the country’s economic issues requires time and strategic planning. He addressed the issue of subsidy removal, pointing out that Nigeria’s reliance on borrowed funds to sustain the oil industry is unsustainable.

Shittu dismissed claims of the subsidy’s return, citing the current petrol prices as proof. He also addressed concerns about food scarcity and high prices, attributing the situation to traders’ greed and manipulation. He called on the government to intervene by making food available at affordable prices through existing silos.

When asked about his political aspirations, Shittu expressed a willingness to run for governor of Oyo State if it aligns with God’s will, citing the influence of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo in shaping his political ideology. He also confirmed plans to establish an ICT university in Ibadan, inspired by the need to equip Nigerian graduates with practical skills for job readiness.

In response to complaints about SIM card registration and verification processes, Shittu explained the government’s efforts to enhance security by linking SIM cards to National Identification Numbers (NIN). He clarified that discrepancies in registration data could lead to delays in linking SIMs and encouraged individuals to ensure accurate information submission for reliable security data.

Overall, Shittu emphasized the importance of patience, strategic planning, and accountability in addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges and expressed optimism for positive outcomes under President Tinubu’s leadership.
